Day 01

I feel in many ways, today might best resemble what this trip has the potential to become. I spent the first several hours immobilized by the worst car-sickness I have ever experienced. Yet, somehow in pushing through, the trip became quite pleasant. We reached our intended destination of Fort Wayne, IN entirely too early and so decided to travel 5 hours further - from North Carolina to Iowa in a single day! And after an abbreviated, though refreshing stop at Lake Michigan we forged past Chicago only to encounter the worst rain storm any of us had ever driven through. But sometimes when things seem most bleak, it only serves as a prelude to something far greater than we could ever imagine - a sunset to set the stage for what I hope to be a near month of beauty and wonder. Yes, we will encounter hardship. However, perseverance will prove a greater blessing.

wide-eyedwalkers:

It is the eve of our epic adventure. 6,500 miles. Across 18 states. And 6 people cozied up in a Toyota Sienna. Excitement abounds, with a healthy dose of trepidation.
As I look forward there are many things I want this trip to bring. Amazing photographs top the list. Pictures are memories that last more than a lifetime. Something we can share even when our minds fail. A definitive sense of awe and wonder. It is hard to even imagine the places we will see and the people we will meet along the way. No stranger exists between the two Davids (father & son). Also, some level of accomplishment. Jenny and I are soon moving to Eastern Europe, yet this journey, for the moment, seems so much more unsurmountable. Perhaps it is the anxiety of spending three weeks invading each other’s shrinking personal space. Or maybe just the disbelief of being in some of the most amazing places in North America. In any case, here we come.
As we go, I want this space to be more than a daily post of breath-taking images - though I hope it is that as well. I want so much to make a public journal we can share with family and friends along the way. And a record of my memories: visual, mental and emotional. So follow along, enjoy, encourage and share with us as we wander with wide eyes.
